An Interview With One of our Volunteer Receptionists

We asked Gary to tell us about his experience so far volunteering with us at the Help In Hub. Gary began working with us in June of this year and here is what he had to say:

“The reason for volunteering was to provide support to the organisation and learn. Plus, in my case offer my experience such as admin support. Also, it was a great opportunity to meet new people make friends, and offer something back to the community. I had always suffered from a lack of confidence in learning new things and meeting new people.  So, this was a great way for me to push myself and become more confident in this area.”

“I have gained an awful lot from working with SECH. I often appear to be a happy jolly person but inside I lack confidence and often have fears of rejection. I was very nervous about joining SECH… due to my own fears and very nearly walked away. However, I walked in and immediately everyone I met was wonderful, kind, and welcoming which made me feel so much better. I was shown how to do things and there was always someone close by asking, if I was ok, and supporting me. I never felt awkward asking silly questions or even good ones!

As time went on, I was given more things to get involved in, if I wished to. This was so important to have that little push as I was nervous to put myself forward.

I realise now that I can be of some value to the team, and it has helped me to become a much happier person in myself. They will never realise just how important this is to me.The positive feelings I got made me a bit emotional as at last I had found a team that I enjoyed working with.  I can never thank them enough.”

“Volunteering gets mixed reactions and you can get a negative experience as I have done in the past. However, find the right organisation and team and it is a fantastic thing to do whatever your situation and whatever your age.  There is something out there for everyone to enjoy and remember if you don’t like it you can walk away. So YES, I would recommend volunteering, and if you are like me nervous about doing this kind of work.  Then I say this to you GO FOR IT!“
